Which Tea Has the Most Caffeine and Least Caffeine? The Answer May Surprise You!

Tea with mint leaves

Caffeine has many natural health benefits and may increase energy, alertness, and your ability to concentrate. However, according to John Hopkins Medicine, having too much of a good thing can result in unpleasant side effects like jitteriness, increased heart rate, insomnia, and higher blood pressure.

The amount of caffeine you can enjoy without unpleasant side effects will vary dramatically based on your health, genetics, and general caffeine sensitivity. As a result, it’s helpful for many of us to know how much caffeine is in the drinks we’re consuming.

Today, we’re sharing a breakdown of the many types of caffeinated coffee and tea beverages and how much caffeine each drink has on average.

Coffee & Decaf Coffee

The amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee varies significantly based on the type of coffee bean and how the coffee is created.

The average cup of coffee contains 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine.

Decaffeination removes around 97% of the caffeine in coffee beans, so a typical cup of decaf coffee contains only two milligrams of caffeine.

Coffee Leaf Tea

The amount of caffeine in coffee leaf tea varies dramatically depending on the type of coffee the coffee leaf tea is made from. Typically, you can expect coffee leaf tea to have about a fourth to a half of the amount of caffeine found in one cup of coffee, which is about 15 to 65 milligrams of caffeine.

Try our delightful coffee leaf teas to put some pep in your step:

Black Tea

Black tea usually has between 40 to 70 milligrams of caffeine per eight-ounce serving. In contrast, the average cup of coffee contains 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine.

Black tea is an excellent alternative for someone who feels a bit jittery after drinking coffee or wants to extend their morning ritual with 2 - 5 cups of black tea, depending on the caffeine level, to achieve the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee.

Some of our favorite black tea options include:

  • Mint Black Tea: A classic, refreshing black tea choice! Our Mint Black Tea is made from invigorating mint, making it an excellent choice for waking up on a sleepy morning.
  • English Breakfast Black Tea: Many say that English Breakfast Black Tea has a coffee-like taste because of its rich undertones and slightly bittersweet flavors. This robust tea is a great choice for the morning or an afternoon pick-me-up.
  • Peaches ‘n Cream Black Tea: This delightful tea is wonderful hot in the winter and iced in the summer. It balances peaches' sweet and delicate qualities with a decadent "dairy" cream flavor.

Serving black tea iced or cold brewed is a popular way to drink this type of tea. Check out our previous How to Cold Brew Tea article for more information.

Green Tea

If you’re interested in significantly reducing your caffeine intake or want a small burst of caffeine in the early afternoon to give you a boost, green tea is a wonderful choice. Not only does it contain many amazing antioxidants and flavonoids, but it’s also frequently regarded as having many other health benefits.

Green tea typically has between 35 to 45 milligrams of caffeine per eight-ounce serving. If you are usually a coffee drinker, it will take around 4 cups of green tea to consume the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee.

Try these fantastic green teas for a boost:

  • Pomegranate Green Tea: This sweet and tart pomegranate tea blend is luscious and crisp. Perfect for any time of day with its refreshing and airy finish!
  • Jasmine Green Tea: Jasmine Green Tea is one of the most popular teas on the market, which isn't surprising considering its beautiful floral scent. The exquisite jasmine blossoms in our tea also give it a stunning visual appeal.
  • Mint Gunpowder Green Tea: This intense and invigorating minty green tea is a delightful experience. Absolutely delicious iced or hot!

White Tea

White tea contains the smallest amount of caffeine at only 15 to 30 milligrams per eight-ounce serving. White tea is an excellent choice if you want a tiny amount of caffeine or are weaning entirely off caffeine.

Here are a few of our favorite white teas:

Yerba Mate Tea

Yerba Mate is a strongly caffeinated tea with about 80 milligrams of caffeine per serving. For reference, this is only 15 milligrams of caffeine less than the average coffee, which starts at 95 milligrams of caffeine.

Try these yummy Yerba Mate teas:

  • Mocha Hazelnut Yerba Mate Tea: This tea has mellow chicory notes blended with decadent hazelnut and chocolate, making it the perfect choice for those of you with a sweet tooth!
  • Yerba Mate Tea: The classic Yerba Mate Tea tastes earthy and bittersweet. This particular tea has a similar caffeine content to mild arabica coffee.
  • Juicy Mango Yerba Mate Tea: This succulent tea combines the herbaceous, earthy taste of Yerba Mate and luscious mangos. You’ll love the robust and delightful taste this tea packs.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is a traditional Chinese tea with a fruity, floral, and light taste. Typically, oolong tea contains between 37 to 55 milligrams of caffeine per serving, placing it somewhere between black and green tea in terms of caffeine content.

Delight your senses with these oolong teas:

  • Blackberry Sage Oolong Tea: The perfect blend of earthy sage, sweet blackberry, and raspberry! A robust choice with many bright flavors.
  • Cherry Marzipan Oolong Tea: A truly unique tea that brings the sweet and fruity flavor of cherries and the luxurious nutty flavor of marzipan.
